Fiesta

Well, it's been a couple of days since my last post, but work was keeping me busy - who would have thought. Anyway, roughly a month ago, on June 17th, was the Icelandic "independence day" from the Danish. This meant that no work and a big celebration in downtown Reykjavík and all over Iceland. Béla's girlfriend was visiting for the week and Péter was excited to be performing some capoeira on stage for all of Reykjavík. There was a lot of music and dancing and food the whole day. Here as some pics from that day:

Here we have some ladies belly-dancing.
This one is of Péter's great capoeira skills. He practiced this all the time at home and everywhere we would go.
This was the capoeira teacher for this group. He happened to also be Hungarian and even invited us to his Icelandic girlfriend's house for his going-back-to-Hungary party. The family and house and the other guests were all very awesome and nice.
More dancers.
An Icelandic girl wearing some sort of traditional clothes or something. Of course with her candy and Hello Kitty balloons.

The day after the big party, my boss happened to come to Reykjavík for a meeting and I returned with him to Akureyri that evening. The flights to and from are so short, theres no need to book a hotel for your one day meetings. As I may have said earlier, I have to pack all of my stuff (clothes, etc.) along with my work computer and monitor. It was a bit tedious, but my boss only had a small bag, so even though all of my bags surpassed the weight limit, we ended up checking all of our stuff without paying anything. The local airport was small and pretty awesome. No security checkpoints, long lines, customs, and almost no English. It was an overall good airport experience and the plane was quite small (looked something like this but longer).

That afternoon/night when I arrived in Akureyri, my boss, Ásgeir gave me a quick tour of the city and explained some of the history and places. We then went to dinner at this fancy-looking place that seemed expensive. It was expensive. We sat and when I read the menu I saw that they served...KANGAROO. Since I'm the type of person who cannot let a chance to try new foods go to waste, I naturally ordered the kangaroo (which was served medium rare). The meat was interesting and not bad. Most similar in taste to a nice beef steak. I'm still surprised that I found kangaroo some 10,000 miles from the kangaroo nativeland. So assuming that it was in fact kangaroo, I have added that to my weird food list, and in the least imaginable country. Hopefully during my stay here I will also add rotten/fermented shark, whale, and puffin to my list.
